SMUFU Guidelines for Charity Donations
- SMUFU will give first consideration to a charity with a local base/ appeal.
- SMUFU will support charities which provide assistance to young people directly or indirectly.
- SMUFU will provide seed money for HRM community based projects.
- SMUFU will support charities which provide assistance to people with disabilities.
- SMUFU will support charities which are not otherwise supported by a general university appeal (e.g. United Way).
- Normally SMUFU charity funds will be directed toward recognized, ongoing charity organizations, but in extraordinary circumstances the SMUFU Charity Subcommittee will consider requests for special needs regarding individuals.
- Normally support from SMUFU funds for individual charities will not exceed $1,000.00.
- Overall charity donations from SMUFU funds normally will not exceed $10,000.00 per annum.
- SMUFU will not seek a charitable tax status, will not give tax receipts, and will not demand that any cause to which it gives money have an official charity designation.
- The “SMUFU Charity Subcommittee” will be composed of three individuals, normally two from the SMUFU executive and one SMUFU member not on the Executive.
- The SMUFU Charity Subcommittee will submit nominations for charity donations to the SMUFU Executive for approval.
- Requests for assistance from other unions will go directly to the SMUFU Executive and will be considered there on an individual basis.
